The comic fantasy novel that was an early exploration of the idea that was to become the bestselling Discworld series. Strata is another early foray that Pratchett took in to Science Fiction before he rested himself firmly in to the loving arms of Fantasy. My views on this one are similar to that of his other sci-fi novel, The Dark Side of the Sun in that it isn't necessarily a good novel, let alone a good sci-fi story. It is one of Pratchett's first novels and one of the few purely science fiction novels he wrote, along with The Dark Side of the Sun and The Nome Trilogy. Very early effort by Pratchett, as I understand it. "Strata" is a straight-forward science fiction novel, somewhat akin to Larry Niven's "Ringworld" series. For that reason, fans of Pratchett's "Discworld" books may not entirely enjoy "Strata". But if you like straight SF by authors such as Niven, Brin, or Clarke, you will probably enjoy "Strata". Terry Pratchett's Strata, is an early work, that stands on its own as a nice piece of science fiction. The characters are interesting and the plot line is clever.
